Keanan Duffty is my guest for this week’s interview. Keanan is a Bowie collaborator who sits at the intersection of fashion and music. A British-born designer based in New York, Duffty built a menswear label, and he has also worked as an author, educator, and musician. His direct collaboration with Bowie was the limited-edition “Bowie by Keanan Duffty” menswear collection sold through Target in 2007—I still own and wear a shirt from the line I bought at the time. Keanan borrowed the term “Slinky Vagabond” from the lyrics of “Young Americans” first for use as the name of his label, and later for his band. The musical project formed in 2007 with guitarist Earl Slick, alongside Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols and Clem Burke of Blondie, and later brought in additional Bowie alumni such as Mike Garson and Ava Cherry. Duffty has also participated in Bowie fan-convention programming, including performing at the David Bowie World Fan Convention in Liverpool in 2024. You can see Keanan covering Bowie at the 2004 convention here:
